Junior Coaching Update

The junior programme is continuing to thrive as we approach the colder months. Well done to all the children participating and improving. The ‘player of the week’ trophy has been a popular addition to the younger age group classes, a 2nd trophy has been ordered for the mini red class on Wednesdays at 4.30pm.

Thank you all for taking the time to read through the player report cards, I have had positive feedback from these and will continue to produce them on a half termly basis.

There has been a slight update to the timetable this term, please see below:

Tuesday:

• 1630 – 1730 Mini Red (5 – 8 years)

• 1730 – 1830 Mini Orange/Green (8 – 11 years)

• 1830 – 1930 Yellow Development (11 + years)

Wednesday:

• 1630 – 1730 Mini Red (5 – 8 years)

• 1730 – 1830 Girls Development Squad (11 – 14 years)

• 1830 – 1930 Boys Development Squad (11 – 14 years)

Matchplay is an area where I am looking to offer more. Please stay tuned for upcoming junior tournaments in the York area.

Many thanks and see you on court.

Jim Hughes Trophy – 2018 Winners!

Club Events

Congratulations to Carole Withers and Tom Shouksmith

The weather held last Saturday afternoon and plenty of hard fought tennis took place on all three courts, well done to all those who joined in – especially players who are new to the club or just getting back into tennis.  I’m sure everyone agreed the standard was high with the trophy at stake but also the atmosphere was fun and sociable with drinks and food once the outcome of the tournament had been announced. Both Tom and Carole played consistently well with all partners throughout the event and enjoyed their first ever Jim Hughes Trophy win! Liz Powell and Philippa Page were hot on Carole’s heels with Phil Sinton and Andy Ivel pushing Tom right until the final round.

Thanks as always to our Club Secretary – Chris Place, for organising and running such an enjoyable afternoon and all her work throughout the year.

LTA Mini Tennis

At Rufforth Tennis Club we follow the LTA Mini Tennis guidelines for developing players 10 and under. There are three stages encompassing players from 5 to 10 years. At the mini red level, the court is much smaller, and the balls are larger and softer. As the child progresses through the colours (red, orange and green), the courts get bigger and the balls faster. Mini tennis is a brilliant way to get kids playing the sport on a court size to suit them.

Rufforth 3rd Team beat Stillington 2nds convincingly!

A strong home side made sure of the points in their opening fixture of the 2018 campaign.  Philippa Page and Phil Sinton bagged a 31 game haul to guarantee the right result.  The first couple were more than adequately supported by Captain Jack Benson and his partner for the evening Christine Place, with Liz Powell and Tom Frame continuing their successful partnership from last season. The visitors were always behind and were unable to close the gap as Rufforth displayed some exceptional tennis and the result never looked in doubt. The final score was 57 – 41

The 2nd Team welcomes Alne on Thursday evening, this fixture always proves to be a close and exciting game having produced some intense battles over the past few seasons. Good luck to all involved!

B86CBA5F-4D47-4C64-91A0-4DF24A3744C7

Once again Rufforth remain undefeated throughout the winter season to claim their second successive title at Wetherby. A squad featuring Sue Yoward, Kate Lewis, Denise Reilly, Judith Evans, James Edmond, Ed Ziegler, Tom Shouksmith and Andy Ivel saw off competition from Boroughbridge, Boston Spa and Wetherby to ensure maximum points! Rufforth are looking to enter another team in the Winter League for the 2018/19 season enabling more of our members to continue competitive tennis throughout the colder months.
