About the Village

Rufforth is a village about four miles west of York, the larger village in the civil parish of Rufforth with Knapton. Both villages have a history extending back to Saxon times, and they are even mentioned in the Domesday Book, the great survey of England and Wales completed in 1086 by order of King William the Conqueror.

The village of Rufforth is home to Rufforth Primary School, The Old School tearooms and village shop.

Rufforth Tennis Club is located along Wetherby Road, beside the Rufforth Playing Fields Association, whose fields host Rufforth’s Cricket Club, Rufforth United football team, and several junior football sides. The location also serves as a camping site for those looking to explore the city of York and the Yorkshire countryside. Just beyond the playing fields stands the old RAF Rufforth Air Force Station, which today operates as York Gliding Centre.
